1st Children Summit
1st Children’s Summit on Hands on Science and Environmental Education (HSCI-EE-1) was held within the frame of 9th International Conference on Hands-on Science (HSCI 2012) on October 20, 2012 at Akdeniz University in Antalya, Turkey.

The primary schools, science and arts centers, kindergartens, children and their families in the city of Antalya along with invited academicians from United States, Portugal, Romania, India , Palestine and Tanzania participated to the event. Academicians, teachers and students delivered presentations, conducted workshops and experiments, performed several demonstrations and visited the project stands of each school.

The science and artworks of students aged 9 to 15 from Romania, Palestine and Portugal took place at the Summit. An international photography exhibition with the theme “Nature through the Childrens’ Eyes” captured great interest of visitors throughout the day.

A “Robotic” Workshop was performed by Prof. Dr. Manuel Costa from Do Minho University, Portugal. “Tooth Shapes and Diets of Living and Extinct Animals” was the theme of another workshop performed by Prof. Dr. James Westgate who participated to the summit from Lamar University in Texas, USA.

The certificates of delegate students and teachers were delivered by Prof. Dr. Manuel Costa at a special ceremony in conference hall. Program lasted with parallel workshops, exhibitions and demonstrations until evening in Akdeniz University.

In addition to many other participants across Turkey, thirty five S.O.S. Project Schools participated to the 1st Children Summit as the natural delegates.

This project which has been the first of its kind in Turkey, has been proceeding towards being a global forum. In closing ceremony, the participant children declared their final call by saying “Let’s work together and contribute in protecting our planet!”
